Circular Economy and Remanufacturing—what exactly does that mean? We increasingly encounter terms like Circular Economy, sustainability, refurbishment, remanufacturing, etc. in our daily lives.
Since 2015, the Circular Economy has been taken seriously and supported and promoted by governments and international committees. The EU’s climate protection programs and Leaders Conference also include remanufacturing as one of 4 key pillars of the “4R Campaign: Reduce, Reuse, Reman, Recycle.” This means remanufacturing is featured in all major international documents and programs. This can save up to 90% (!) of materials, 80% (!) of energy, and thus significant amounts of C02 emissions.
We are the generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it!
In contrast, when we look at the supply chain of a product manufactured according to Circular Economy principles—here as a remanufactured product—most of the resource-depleting steps are eliminated.

In principle, remanufacturing is very simple. A failed part is completely disassembled, inspected, and then restored to working condition using state-of-the-art techniques and components. Through insights gained from field experience and advancements in manufacturing processes and materials science, this typically results in a better part than it was when new—and often still is!
In summary, the definition of remanufacturing developed by global associations and companies is as follows:
Remanufacturing can be found in all areas of life. The largest share of the market volume shown above—projected at approximately €100,000,000,000—comes from aviation and medical technology! And more and more products are being given a new, better life: smartphones, computers, clothing, etc.
