Controls exhaust gas recirculation, that is, how much exhaust gas is fed back into the intake tract in order to lower the combustion temperature and with it nitrogen oxides.
EGR shut-off valve
A sub-assembly of the EGR system that controls how much exhaust gas is actually recirculated.
